Being reachable is part of the work
A criminal charge does not keep office hours and neither does the anxiety that comes with it. Calls and messages are answered in the evenings and on weekends, and clients are told what is happening as it happens rather than a week after the fact.
Preparation is the whole job
Every file is read in full, including the material the Crown summarises rather than highlights. By the time a matter is discussed with the Crown or argued in court, the questions have already been worked out.
Straight answers, including the unwelcome ones
Clients are told what the realistic outcomes are, not what they want to hear. That is uncomfortable occasionally and it is the only honest way to let someone make decisions about their own case.
