Criminal defence at the Durham Region Courthouse
Criminal matters for all of Durham Region are heard at the Durham Region Courthouse at 150 Bond Street East in Oshawa. Both the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice sit there.
The courthouse serves Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Clarington, Scugog, Brock and Uxbridge, which makes it one of the busier criminal courts east of Toronto. Charges laid anywhere in the region by Durham Regional Police are prosecuted there, and the local Crown office runs its own domestic violence, drug and guns and gangs streams.
Highway 401 runs the length of the region and is a heavy enforcement corridor for both Durham Regional Police and the Ontario Provincial Police. That produces a steady volume of impaired driving charges and, increasingly, drug and firearms charges arising out of highway stops. Those files are search and seizure cases before they are anything else.
